Cannot program EVO ALL - blue light goes out with ignition on

0 votes
Howdy,

I cannot program my EVO ALL for a 2014 Audi A3. I have used guide #3035 connection 1. I have the two CAN bus wires connected to the convenience CAN twisted pair under the steering column (both read ~2.5v with ignition on) and the yellow wire on the 20 pin connector connected to +12v ignition.

I plug the unit in and enter programming mode with solid blue light, but when I turn on the ignition the light turns off. The troubleshoot guide here suggested the CAN hi/low are reversed. Despite knowing the hi/low was correct I switched them over and retested with same result.

I've checked that I'm getting ~2.5v right up to the back of the 5pin connector. Anyone have any suggestions why the EVO ALL isn't detecting a CAN bus signal?

Thanks,

Jeremy

What's the color of the can bus wires you are connected to ?

What firmware are you using ?

Does the light turn back on when turning ignition off during programming ?

Hi Mathieu,

The colours of the CAN bus I'm using are orange/brown and orange/green.

The firmware (off memory) is 4.18? I can't check now as all the writing has rubbed off the silver sticker on the back of the unit after only half an hour of handling it! It had a build date of 09/14 so had assumed the firmware would have been pretty recent.

Yes the blue light comes back on when I turn the ignition back off. I can repeat the process over and over again, the light will extinguish with igntion on, then come back on when I turn the ignition off.

Any help with this greatly appriciated!

Cheers,

Jeremy

If you plug the EVO in the flash-link updater, you will get the firmware. This will help cancel out the fact that the wrong firmware is in the unit. It says 4.18 on the back but what if someone changed it to Toyota or GM specific firmware? who knows...

Try a master reset and also connect the wires directly on the vehicle and not through the alligator clips.

  1. Hold down programming button while plugging in datalink connector.
  2. Let go of button when LED is RED.
  3. Push and hold button again until all three LEDs start to alternate.
  4. Disconnect unit, she is now reset.

Retry after the reset.

The symptoms you are describing can be caused by the following:

  • Wrong firmware
  • Module not detecting Can, wires may be reversed
  • Module not detecting Can, connection unstable.

Hey Robert,

Thanks for the feedback. I had tried a master reset after reading another Q&A with no change in behaviour. I'd also thought the alligator clips were causing interferance so wired the units leads directly to the CAN bus but again no change.

I hadn't purchased the flash-link updater as the products page for the A3 said it wasn't required. Little frustrating, guess I will have to order the flashlink and then go from there.

Thanks for the reply.

the firmware we ship the units with, 4.18, works on tht vehicle. The service number would help identify if 4.18 is actually loaded onto it or if it was changed. Technically, if the unit was boutght directly from us, 4.18 is there. if it was bought from somewhere else, I dunno if someone changed anything.

Just to be sure, try reversing the Can wires. Connections for all (98% of them) VWs and Audi though are :

  • Orange/Green - Can-High  ---- to Grey wire on EVO
  • Orange/Brown - Can-Low  ----- to Grey/black wire on EVO

(as i wrote that i'm thinking that maybe you are connected to the orange can wires of the EVO and not the grey ones ?? )

Hey Robert,

Frustratingly most of the number under the barcode rubbed off the sticker. Its a brand new car so may have been caused by something they sprayed on the leather/floormats.

Have swapped the hi/low wires just to be sure without luck. Definitely using the gray and gray/black wires from the EVO.

Will get hold of a flashlink and go from there (unless someone else has other ideas in the meantime).

Cheers,

Jeremy
