This might sound funny but you can squeak a little more range out of the remote and antenna by placing the remotes under your chin and using your body as an amplifier. Other than this old little trick the range is what it is. If you want more range you will need to purchase a different remotes and antenna kit compatible with the e400.

Which remote and which antenna kit are compatible with the e400 in order to get a range of 4000 feet?
I would suggest the ftx-64-2w or 1w...2w= 2 way, 1w= 1 way remotes, these remotes and antenna are tested at 4000 with no obstructions in sight.
What if the remote is pressed inside a wall-mart building, would that be considered obstruction?

I did a test and compared it with an OEM starter. Side by side at the back of the store, the oem worked. Only difference was the range. Had to walk all the way to the entrance for the e400 to work.

Is the ftx-64-1W the only compatible antenna for the e400?
Yes buildings will impede range, specially something like a wal mart or a hospital these have several wiresless networks going on inside.

As far as I know, no the ftx64 will require its own antenna.
